Super Mario Bros. Wonder Trailer Previews Elephant Mario, Release Date Revealed

During Wednesday’s Nintendo Direct, the company unveiled the Super Mario Bros. Wonder trailer alongside the game. The newly-announced title is a 2D Mario game that will feature new suits, levels, and more when it releases on October 20, 2023 for the Nintendo Switch.

What’s new in Super Mario Bros. Wonder?

The Super Mario Bros. Wonder trailer brought players back to the classic, 2D platforming style of past Mario games. In the trailer, Mario could be seen dodging new enemy types like a giant, round hippopotamus-looking creature. New power-ups were also teased — including one that turns Mario fully into an elephant — and the game’s newest mechanic, Wonder Flowers.

Wonder Flowers will completely transform the level in both the way it looks and plays. Mario can stretch into an extremely tall version of himself, ride a herd of animals, and even climb on top of wriggling green pipe-worms.

The trailer also revealed a handful of characters besides Mario would be playable. These include Peach, Luigi, Toad, and even Daisy — with Yoshi also making an appearance in the trailer. Currently, it’s unclear whether or not non-Mario characters will be playable outside of the game’s co-op mode, however.

Super Mario Bros. Wonder’s reveal marks the first time in over a decade that Nintendo has released a new side-scrolling Mario game. The last two — New Super Mario Bros. 2 for the Nintendo 3DS and New Super Mario Bros. U for the Wii U — released in 2012.
