Square Enix has a lot of things up their sleeves, including having devoted a division of theirs to work on a certain task: creating more Switch games. It shouldn’t truly come as a shock, especially considering Octopath Traveler is currently being set up for a launch soon this year, and with Square Enix also considering mods in their future games, it seems as though the studio is turning over a new leaf with its new ideas.
In an interview with GameInformer, Tomoya Asano, the division executive at Square Enix stated that “Square Enix has decided that it wants to focus on original titles for the Switch.” He also mentioned that the team dedicated to developing these Switch games officially became a division back in April. “If Octopath Traveler does well and this is something that appeals to fans, we want to focus on Switch. Please pick up the Switch if you want to play games like Octopath Traveler.”
But it isn’t just Octopath Traveler that’s already being developed on the Switch. Whether the game does well or not, Asano already confirmed that there are more Switch titles on the way. “There are several other titles that we’re currently working on for Switch.” He continues, “If you could just wait a bit longer, we’ll work with Nintendo and announce them in the future.”
Now, the future is a funny thing. When people say it we’re prone to thinking that may mean far in the future, even if that may not be the case at all. It’s a frustrating way of thinking, but it happens to us all. Yet with E3 coming in only a few days time, the possibility of seeing new Switch games from Square Enix may be here sooner than we think.
Personally? A Final Fantasy game on the Nintendo Switch would be an ideal, if unrealistic, desire of ours.
