Octopath Traveler Will Not Receive Any Future DLC or New Game Plus

Highly-anticipated Nintendo Switch exclusive Octopath Traveler received quite a lot of attention at E3 2018. Published by Nintendo, it’s a classic JRPG developed by Square Enix in collaboration with Acquire. Now representatives from both developers have stated that the upcoming game will not receive any future DLC or New Game Plus. That will surely be surprising news for fans who have been awaiting the game.

Speaking to Dengeki Online (translated via Siliconera), Square Enix producer Masashi Takahashi and Acquire director Keisuke Miyauchi clarified several details regarding the upcoming JRPG. Octopath Traveler has been in development since a time when “nobody knew anything about the Nintendo Switch,” which probably means from before the hybrid console was even officially announced.

Octopath Traveler Nintendo Switch: No New Game Plus Mode

Takahashi said that Octopath Traveler will not have a New Game Plus, because it has been designed to be finished in one playthrough. Although this news would be a disappointment to many who wish to replay the game after finishing it, he also said that the game’s difficulty will naturally increase or decrease depending on the order of progress. Players might find some places easier if they’ve already been there earlier while the opposite will be true if they visit it later.

Octopath Traveler Nintendo Switch: No Planned DLC

On the subject of DLC, Takahashi said that there are no plans for any future DLC as he described the retail version of the game as a “complete game.” Additionally, he confirmed that players can complete the entire game without recruiting any of the other characters, which might be enticing for those planning for a challenge run with a single character.

We reported last week during E3 2018 that Octopath Traveler will take around 80-100 hours to complete if players were to play through all the “substories, optional dungeons, and fully experience everything the world has to offer through the use of path actions.” The JRPG will be released for the Nintendo Switch on July 13th, 2018. Players who want a taste of the game can already download the Octopath Traveler Prologue Demo, which is now available to download in the US Nintendo Switch eShop. Meanwhile, check out the E3 2018 trailer for the game below.
