Red Dead Redemption 2 Leak Reveals Two Disks Will Be Required

Red Dead Redemption 2 could require two disks for its physical release, with Rockstar apparently shipping the game on two Blu-Ray disks in order to offset for its hefty download size. This information was seemingly revealed by way of the game’s leaked box art for its Japanese release, which notes that it requires 105 GB of disk space alongside an image of two Blu-Ray disks.

The box art has not been confirmed by Rockstar, though as it contains new screenshots for the game, it appears to be legitimate. The image was shared on Reddit, with the inlays having reportedly been sent out to Japanese retailers.

If true, this will be a relief to those with dwindling hard drive space or poor internet connections. With the game clocking in at over 100 GB and game disks only allowing for 50 GB of data, if the game ships on one disk, it would likely require an extra download of over 50 GB. This is larger than the size of most full games, so to get RDR2 running many players would either need to clear out old game data, or spend a long time waiting for the western to download to their consoles.

Considering that Red Dead Redemption 2 is arguably the most highly anticipated game of the year, many were concerned that its huge download size would ensure that they wouldn’t be able to play it on release day. If the game ships on two disks, then this would ensure that those opting for a physical release would be able to jump into the game sooner rather than later.

While shipping the game on two disks would inevitably ramp up Rockstar’s manufacturing costs, considering how much RDR2 is expected to sell, it shouldn’t harm its production. Coupled with digital downloads becoming more lucrative than ever, the sequel is a surefire financial success regardless of how many disks it launches on.
