Super Mario Odyssey has become the best-selling 3D Mario game this century. It’s certainly moved an impressive number of units since its release: 13.76 million copies of the newest core Super Mario title have been sold to date. This makes it one of the most popular titles for the Nintendo Switch and the best-selling 3D Mario game since this century began.
The new was revealed in sales data from Nintendo as part of a regular financial report. 13.76 million have picked up a copy of Mario’s latest adventure in three dimensions. While it innovates on previous titles in a few ways, Super Mario Odyssey is more or less a bog-standard core game of the franchise. Bowser has kidnapped Princess Peach and Mario gets thrown into a series of strange lands in his quest to rescue her. This particular adventure takes place on a hat-shaped ship called, appropriately enough, the Odyssey.
Although Super Mario Odyssey is the best-selling 3D Super Mario game since 2000, it’s hasn’t been the strongest performer as compared to other Nintendo titles. The crown is firmly held by Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, which has moved a hair over 15 million copies, effectively being in the library of half of all Nintendo Switch owners. Super Smash Bros. Ultimate takes up third place with 12.08 million sales, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild holds fourth place with 11.68 million sales, and the Pokemon Let’s Go games round out the top five with a combined 10 million in sales. Here are the top 10 Nintendo first-party games by sales:
- Mario Kart 8 Deluxe – 15.02 million units
- Super Mario Odyssey – 13.76 million units
- Super Smash Bros. Ultimate – 12.08 million units
- The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild – 11.68 million units
- Pokemon: Let’s Go, Pikachu! and Let’s Go, Eevee! – 10.00 million units
- Splatoon 2 – 8.27 million units
- Super Mario Party – 5.30 million units
- 1-2 Switch – 2.86 million units
- Mario Tennis Aces – 2.53 million units
- Kirby Star Allies – 2.42 million units
There may be one caveat on Super Mario Odyssey’s status as the king of this century for core Mario games. As the Video Game Sales Wiki shows, Super Mario Odyssey is the best-selling 3D Mario game on a single console. However, Super Mario 64 sold 11.91 million units on the Nintendo 64 and 11.06 million units on the Nintendo DS. When combined, this puts it ahead of Odyssey by 8 million units for the best-selling Super Mario game overall.
