Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice arrives on Nintendo Switch in fine form

Nintendo Switch owners got a shock to the system with the last Nintendo Direct, as Ninja Theory’s Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice was confirmed for the platform. Many were wondering how the intricate adventure would fit on the Switch, but lo and behold, the team at QLOC has done it, as the new Switch port of the game is available right now.

Going for $29.99, the game offers the same dark, harrowing journey that PlayStation 4 and Xbox One owners have been enjoying over the past couple of years. And what’s more, it doesn’t sound like that much was lost in the transition over to Switch, judging by some early reviews.

With that said, the game does take up quite a bit of memory card space. Its download size is a hefty 18.2GB, one of the biggest games on the platform to date. So if you do want to add it to your library, you’ll want to clear some room on your memory card. (Here’s hoping for a physical version in the future!)

It sounds like all that storage space is used properly, however, as some critics consider it a visual tour-de-force on the system. Nintendo Life, for example, provided nothing but praise for it. “To have Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice on Switch in this form is a blessing that you shouldn’t miss out on,” said reviewer Gavin Lane. “The game itself is a psychological sensory experience that we thoroughly recommend, but the fact that it’s been translated to Switch in such a complete fashion is the true surprise here. It doesn’t feel like a downgrade at all – it stands proudly alongside the other ‘miracle’ ports on the system, arguably surpassing them in some ways. It’s a remarkable effort and a challenge to other developers who insist Switch couldn’t handle their games.”

It’s not your usual Switch gaming experience, that’s for sure. Hellblade follows an emotionally broken Celtic warrior who journeys into Viking hell in the hopes of finding her dead lover’s soul. It’s definitely not your typical adventure, but that’s what makes it stand out.

Want to add it to your collection? You can do so by ordering the game here or through the Nintendo eShop. Judging by how the game has fared on other platforms, we expect Hellblade to be nothing short of a hit on the Switch. It’s available for Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC as well.
