Accolade has decided to delay the Bubsy: Paws on Fire Switch version once again. The publisher last delayed the game by a month back in April, and now it appears that the Nintendo Switch release date is being pushed even further out.
To be clear, the delay only applies to the Nintendo Switch version of Bubsy: Paws on Fire. The PlayStation 4 and PC versions of the game have not been delayed, and will still be coming out on May 16.
Accolade and developer Choice Provisions previously delayed all three versions from February 2019 to this month. With the delay however, Bubsy: Paws on Fire Switch now has a nebulous “Summer 2019” release date.
Choice Provisions did not give out any specific reason for the delay of the Switch version. All that the press release mentioned was that the game needed “final adjustments.” That said, co-founder Mike Roush did give some reassurances stating that “the Switch version of Bubsy: Paws on Fire is in great shape, we’re in the final push on some non-gameplay aspects on Switch.”
Announced in October of last year, Bubsy: Paws on Fire represents the latest game with Accolade’s mascot character. While the series launched to a strong start with the original Bubsy, it gained a questionable reputation over the years thanks to a number of bad sequels. The most notorious of these was Bubsy 3D, an awkward attempt to bring the game into the third dimension on PlayStation back in 1996. The issues with that may have soured Accolade from doing another 3D Bubsy game, at least until now.
For Bubsy: Paws on Fire, developer Choice Provisions is re-imagining Bubsy as a runner. This should come as no surprise considering the studio’s experience with the genre, having released other runner games such as Bit.Trip Runner, Bit.Trip Presents… Runner2: Future Legend of Rhythm Alien, and Runner 3. To add to this formula, Choice Provisions is giving Bubsy: Paws on Fire multiple playable characters, each with a unique combo system. With this in mind, it seems that while Bubsy: Paws on Fire may not be the 3D Bubsy game fans have been wanting, it should at least be a good game.
