Breath of the Wild sequel started out as DLC

The E3 announcement of Nintendo’s Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild sequel almost broke Zelda fans from an overdose of hype. The trailer was not expected to be an entirely new game, but more likely some DLC. As it turns out, that’s exactly how the sequel began development.

In an interview with Kotaku at Nintendo’s E3 booth, Zelda producer Eiji Aonuma revealed the creation story behind the Breath of the Wild sequel. What started as ideas for Breath of the Wild DLC quickly piled up and reached a point where there was too much content. Instead of cutting back and releasing DLC, Aonuma went forward with developing a sequel.

“When we released the DLC for Breath of the Wild, we realized that this is a great way to add more elements to the same world,” he said. “Initially, we were thinking of just DLC ideas, but then we had a lot of ideas and we said, ‘This is too many ideas, let’s just make one new game and start from scratch.'”

There’s no reason to complain about too much Zelda content. Fans have already gone wild over the sequel’s trailer, analyzing it from snout to tail in order to discern what might be going on. The Gerudo text at the beginning has seemingly been translated, there’s a debate over whether or not Zelda herself is playable, and there are large amounts of speculation that the sequel will end up being strongly linked to Twilight Princess.

All we can do is wait for more information from Nintendo. In the meantime, however, fans of the series have thoroughly broken down every frame of the trailer to get as many juicy details as possible. Whether any of our fan predictions come true, or if our wants and needs for gameplay will be met, is ultimately unknown until further announcements.
