Resident Evil New Game May be In Development

A new Resident Evil game may be in development

A new Resident Evil title may be in the testing phase of development. While Capcom has made no announcements of an upcoming RE game, emails have gone out to Resident Evil Ambassadors in Japan recruiting play testers. While the email doesn’t give us any clues to what the game is, it is a harbinger of an impending Capcom game announcement.

The tests will be held on Sunday, September 8, and Monday, September 9, in Tokyo. We don’t know what the game will be, but we can make some educated guesses. Rumors have abounded that a Resident Evil 3 remake is in the works as a follow up to the extremely well-reviewed Resident Evil 2 remake from earlier this year. This would make sense as the game could have been in parallel development with RE2. Both RE2 and RE3 share the RPD and the Raccoon City setting, so it would make sense to go ahead and make some assets for RE3 while RE2 was in development.

The title could also be Resident Evil 8, though a brand new title so close off the back of the RE2 remake seems a bit soon. However, RE8 may have been in the works since the release of RE7 in 2017 which would put development at around the two-and-a-half-year mark. If so, it would likely be ready for playtesting at this point.

Alternatively, the new title may not be a Resident Evil at all. Capcom could be drawing from another franchise. I bet that if it’s not a Resident Evil game, then it’s Dino Crisis. It’s been over a decade since the last entry in that series, and with how much positivity the release of RE2 remake received, the time is ripe to bring Regina back into action.

Since the play testing for the unannounced title is only a week before Tokyo Game Show, we’ll probably see it there. With how prevalent leaking is, Capcom likely wouldn’t be inviting members of the public to playtest the game and not have plans to reveal it soon after.
