Cyberpunk 2077 Stadia release confirmed

Gamescom 2019 has kicked off, and with it a full livestream for Google’s Stadia game streaming service. Google already has a ton of new games lined up, but it announced even more during the stream, including one of the most eagerly anticipated titles in the gaming industry: Cyberpunk 2077 from The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt developer CD Projekt RED. During the stream the developer confirmed a Cyberpunk 2077 Stadia release, so one of the most exciting titles around is coming to Google’s platform.

This is undoubtedly a big coup for Google and Stadia, although of course it doesn’t mean that Cyberpunk 2077 will be available at Stadia’s launch, since the game isn’t due out until next year. Presumably the game will be available at or close to Cyberpunk 2077‘s release date of April 2020, although a specific release date for the Stadia version was not confirmed during the show.

CD Projekt developers were full of praise for Stadia, explaining why Cyberpunk 2077 on the streaming service was a good fit. “Stadia allows more people to experience our stories,” said Miles Tost, senior level designer. “It’s a very technologically demanding game, but with Stadia you can play it respectively on the power of your devices,” added Jakub Szamalek, principal writer on the game.

The developers also had a bit to add about Keanu Reeves’ casting as musician Johnny Silverhand. “We were creating this character,” explained Miles Tost, “and in the process we realized, hey, it would be really cool if Keanu Reeves could play this character.” Keanu’s Johnny Silverhand will be the player’s “guide to the city” and will accompany players for most of the game’s play time, seemingly in holographic form, as one brief scene showed Silverhand in the corner of a room like a ghost. We’ll find out exactly how when the game releases next year.
