Star Wars Battlefront 2 Clone Commando | How to play as a Republic Commando

Star Wars Battlefront 2 is still going strong, nearly two years after the game came out to a decidedly mixed reaction, and its constant popularity isn’t just down to the Star Wars license. It’s primarily down to the constant support the game has received, as well as regular updates that add significant new content to the Battlefront 2 experience. The game just received its latest big update, and very soon we’ll get to play one of the most anticipated units to the battlefront: the Star Wars Battlefront 2 Clone Commando. Here’s everything we know about this popular new character class, how to play as them, and how to get them in-game.

When will the Star Wars Battlefront 2 Clone Commando be available?

The Clone Commando unit was announced in a recent Star Wars Battlefront 2 Roadmap update, which also revealed the new Instant Action single-player mode, the first confirmation that there will be content inspired by The Rise of Skywalker movie, and a co-op mode. The Clone Commando is one of the first new additions announced coming soon to Battlefront 2, and it should drop sometime in September. Not that long to go.

How to get the Star Wars Battlefront 2 Clone Commando

The good news is the Battlefront 2 Clone Commando, like the rest of the game’s DLC and all content expansions, will be a free update to the game. When available in the September update you simply have to have Star Wars Battlefront 2 installed, and the Clone Commando will be patched in. In the game, in order to play as the Clone Commando, you have to play as the Republic during any of the game’s Clone Wars maps, in any mode that supports Reinforcements. This includes the recent Capital Supremacy mode and Instant Action, when that comes out.

After that, you need to start playing the map, as the Commando is a special Reinforcement that you can’t pick as the match starts. The unit costs 500 battle points, so earn them as quickly as you can. The easiest ways to get points quickly include picking the Officer class to boost allies, and playing the objectives. Once you earn 500 points, you can respawn and choose the Clone Commando.

What are the Clone Commando’s abilities?

Like any of the key units in the game, the Clone Commando comes with a range of abilities and weapons that can be used to aid allies and infuriate enemies. The unit’s main firearm is a DC-17m Repeating Blaster Rifle, which is a slightly better version of the standard Assault weapon for the Clone Troopers in Battlefront 2. The Commando also comes with a wrist blade, as seen in Republic Commando, to effectively dispatch enemies with melee attacks. Here are the Commando’s main abilities, and what they do:

  • Left Ability: Anti-Armor Attachment. Effectively turns the Blaster Rifle into a grenade launcher. With this you can fire three small grenades, which are fine against players but particularly effective against vehicles and shields, including the Droidekas.
  • Right Ability: Repulsor Blast. This is a short-range shockwave blast, slightly akin to a Jedi Hero unit’s Force Push ability, that temporarily disorients enemies and either knocks or throws them back. Very useful if surrounded by foes, although we don’t know how effective it’ll be on Hero characters.
  • Middle Ability: Battle Focus. This activates a circular aura around the Commando, and both the player and any allies who enter the circle will receive a damage protection bonus. Furthermore, when this is activated any damage the Commando causes enemies replenishes his health.

Who are the Republic Commandos?

The Clone Commando was introduced in the 2005 videogame Star Wars: Republic Commando, a beloved tactical shooter that inexplicably never received a sequel, despite fan demand. The story of the Delta Squad commandos was expanded in a range of tie-in novels. They were officially canonized in the Disney Star Wars era through appearances in the Clone Wars and Rebels cartoons. Hopefully the rumored sequel Imperial Commando will happen someday, but for now fans will have to make do with playing them in Star Wars Battlefront 2.
