The figures are in, and Borderlands 3 sales have been impressive. The game has done so well, in fact, that it has become the best-selling game in 2K’s history, easily outpacing the launch of Borderlands 2 and showing that it was able to be a success on the Epic Games Store.
A press release from 2K detailed that Borderlands 3 sales consisted of five million units in its first five days, unequivocally making it the fastest-selling game under 2K’s umbrella. Unsurprisingly, this hotly-anticipated sequel also outsold its direct predecessor Borderlands 2 by 50% in the same period.

“Borderlands 3’s incredibly successful launch is a result of the hard work and longstanding partnership between Gearbox Software and 2K,” said 2K President David Ismailer in a press release. “We are immensely grateful to everyone who played a role in making the Borderlands series the global, pop culture phenomenon that it is today, including hundreds of developers at Gearbox and many who have made this their life’s work. We also want to thank the Borderlands community. Mayhem does not happen by itself, and their passion for the series is what drives us to make each game an amazing experience.”
The launch of this game has managed more than one milestone. To start, it’s also the highest percentage of digital sales for a 2K game ever — more than 70% of the copies sold on PC and consoles were purchased digitally. Secondly, Borderlands 3 also managed the highest pre-order figures for 2K ever.
Borderlands 3 also excelled in other important metrics — it was the most-watched game on Twitch on its launch day and it remained in the top five in the following four days.
Suffice it to say, Borderlands 3 sales have exceeded the expectations of 2K and Gearbox Software. The game has undeniably been a success — and it hasn’t even had its Steam launch.
