With The Last of Us 2 release date announcement, many players are counting the days until the game arrives in stores. However, Naughty Dog just dropped some huge news about this sequel, revealing its surprising The Last of Us 2 single-player only ambition.
With the original game featuring an unexpectedly good multiplayer mode, The Last of Us 2 multiplayer was almost an inevitability, especially considering that details about it even leaked earlier this year through a job offer. As it turns out, multiplayer plans were scrapped along the way.

The Last of Us 2 is going to be a single-player only game, with confirmation coming straight from director Neil Druckmann speaking to The Telegraph. But that isn’t all that he has to say, shedding some light on the reasons behind this unexpected decision.
“It’s so ambitious the game doesn’t fit on one BluRay, it’s on two discs. It’s so ambitious that we actually decided to make it single player only,” Druckmann said. “There’s no multiplayer in The Last of Us Part 2. We wanted to take all of the resources to make this the biggest game we’ve ever done,” he added.
The Last of Us 2 single-player only campaign comes on two BluRay discs, something that isn’t a first since another PS4 game did it before, very recently: Rockstar Games’ Red Dead Redemption 2. However, one of the discs from Rockstar’s western epic is an installation disc, with the other disc being used to play the game. It’s unclear if The Last of Us 2 will follow a similar pattern, or if both discs will be filled to the brim with game content.
The Last of Us 2 is shaping up to be massive, and Druckmann’s words about ambition and using all the available resources to create the studio’s biggest game only lends credence to everything that was discussed about it. Naughty Dog is renowned for its attention to detail and gripping experiences, so when Joel’s voice actor Troy Baker says that players are not ready for The Last of Us 2, he’s probably right.
