Will there be a Modern Warfare Battle Royale mode?

Modern Warfare Blackout

There wasn’t a Modern Warfare battle royale mode at launch, but this doesn’t mean that one isn’t on its way. Following the Modern Warfare Season 2 update, players have noticed that a brand new ‘Classified’ option on the menu has been thrown among its Campaign, Multiplayer, Co-op, and Store options. This indicates that a new mode is on its way, with the most likely candidate being a follow-up to Blackout.

Modern Warfare Battle Royale release date explained

The Modern Warfare Battle Royale release date could potentially take place in July, 2020, given that the mode is currently unrevealed and therefore may land in time for Modern Warfare Season 3.

It seems like Infinity Ward would have announced Battle Royale alongside Season 2 in order to drive sales of its new Battle Pass, so it’s unlikely that the mode will launch outside of a new Season. As a result, we expect Modern Warfare Season 3 could be when battle royale finally makes its way to the game.

Still, this is all unconfirmed. While a variety of convincing leaks have pointed to battle royale eventually making its way to Modern Warfare, and its new Classified menu option suggesting more modes are on their way, we’ll have to wait for official confirmation from its developer.

Modern Warfare Battle Royale leaks so far

While there isn’t a battle royale mode in Modern Warfare one could be on the way soon according to various different leaks and rumors. LongSensation on Twitter explains that they’ve heard that “Battle Royale in Modern Warfare will be a free mode to release in early 2020.” Interestingly, the same tweet suggests that “it will be downloadable as a separate game,” which would be excellent news given how large the Modern Warfare file size is already.

Supposedly, the Modern Warfare version of Blackout might contain the following features, according to Twitter account @MWModernWarfare:

  • Cash system
  • Deploy out of an AC-130
  • Elements from previous Modern Warfare games (such as locations) included
  • Planned for 200 players
  • Revive System
  • Ring of poisonous gas that closes in
  • Supply Drops
  • Three times larger than Blackout’s map, with many open and close-quarter areas
  • Tier-based weapons

Of course, this is all rumor. Time will tell if any of this is true. VG Sources, meanwhile, has managed to datamine Modern Warfare’s in-game files on PC and has supposedly uncovered a list of the game’s multiplayer modes. There are a lot there, including staples such as Team Deathmatch, Drop Zone, and Gun Game, but Battle Royale is there, too (at the bottom of their list).

Modern Warfare Battle Royale Map

Perhaps more interestingly, VG Sources has managed to locate the Modern Warfare Blackout map locations within the in-game files on PC, too. Whether or not these end up in the final release of the potential Blackout mode in Modern Warfare is anyone’s guess. These are as follows:

  • Bank
  • Boneyard
  • Dam
  • Downtown
  • Firestation
  • Gas Station
  • Gulag
  • Gunstore
  • Hospital
  • Layover
  • Lumber
  • Police Station
  • Quarry
  • Storagetown
  • Supercenter
  • Train Yard
  • TV Station

According to the same leak, you will be able to pick up Medical, Alcohol, Armor, and Plunder (which is probably in-game cash to spend on unlocking items) while playing the battle royale mode in Modern Warfare. It’s all rumor for now, however, and we’ll need to wait and see if either Activision or Infinity Ward confirm anything. TheGamingRevolution (no connection) has its own ideas on what the map will look like, too.

According to TheGamingRevolution, the projected release date of the Modern Warfare battle royale mode is likely around the end of January. Again, time will tell if any of this is true. Fingers crossed it does happen though, as more modes are always good news. For now, though, you can still play Black Ops 4 Blackout. It’s not going anywhere anytime soon and Treyarch may well update it with new events over the next few months.
