What is Face Off in Call of Duty Black Ops: Cold War?

The launch of Season 1 has brought plenty of changes to Call of Duty Black Ops: Cold War. However, new updates are still bringing about previously released game modes such as Face Off. First debuting in a game long since retired, this mode is currently available in both Modern Warfare and Cold War. But what is Face Off, and what makes it different from the usual multiplayer modes?

Call of Duty - What is Face Off?

Face Off in Call of Duty is a three-versus-three playlist consisting of various Gunfight-based modes. Face Off made its debut in Modern Warfare 3, and has since appeared in both Modern Warfare 2019 and Call of Duty Black Ops: Cold War.

In a nutshell, Face Off is a 3v3 variant that meshes together several other gameplay modes. The team at Activision has described it as a blend of traditional multiplayer with 3v3 Gunfight. In Modern Warfare and Cold War, the playlist includes modes such as Domination, Kill Confirmed, and classic Team Deathmatch.

Of course, diving into this mode will feel a bit different than normal multiplayer. And that’s the point. With groups of only three players, working with your teammates will be critical to success. And since there will be fewer players in each match, all Face Off games will take place on the smaller Gunfight maps. With that said, it will feel more intense than Gunfight matches, as the team size has been increased.

Black Ops Cold War players will have likely noticed that Gunfight was recently added to the game following the Season 1 update. Four maps are available for now, including a remake of the old Black Ops 2 map Raid. As a treat for series followers, Raid is currently available in a 24/7 playlist, along with Prop Hunt, Gunfight, and Nuketown Holiday.

Face Off in Call of Duty is basically a smaller, tighter version of classic multiplayer modes — or a bigger variant of Gunfight, depending on your perspective. With teams of three players and close-knit maps, you’d best bring your A game.
