How to charge Oculus Quest 2 controllers

Knowing how to charge the Oculus Quest 2 controllers is key for continuing to play VR without having to unexpectedly stop a session. Nothing screams “immersive” more than having to take an unplanned break. But how do Oculus Quest 2 controllers charge and can they even be charged anyway?

How to charge Oculus Quest 2 controllers

Oculus Quest 2 controllers cannot be charged because they do not have an internal battery. The link cable is not for charging. The Oculus Quest 2 controllers use one AA battery each. Once unboxed, players have to yank the tab out from the bottom near the battery slot in order to get going. This process can make it seem like it has a rechargeable battery like other controllers, but it does not. Because of this, like the Xbox controllers, it is always good to keep some extra batteries handy.

Recharging existing batteries — external or internal — is obviously much easier than going to get new batteries each time they run dry. Thankfully, there are some rechargeable batteries that can make charge the Oculus Quest 2 controllers much easier.

The Eneloop charging station is excellent for those who want to use and reuse their batteries for a long, long time. These can hold a charge for a while and, according to Eneloop, can keep up to 70% of their charge over 10 years when not in use. But despite that caveat, they still last surprisingly long and charge quickly, too. They’re also pretty cheap, especially since they save users the hassle of having to go out to get new batteries each time.

The charging station comes with four, but more can be purchased separately. These can be used for immediate swapping or can be placed in other items like Xbox controllers or TV remotes. AA batteries are quite ubiquitous, making this a great purchase even if the Oculus Quest 2 controllers are secondary uses.
