Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands isn’t a Borderlands game, Gearbox confirms

Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands was officially unveiled at the Summer Game Fest 2021 opening ceremony, ahead of the E3 2021 celebrations. The Borderlands character, last seen in Borderlands 3, appeared during the show with voice actress Ashly Burch introducing the game. She also revealed its affiliation to the series — or lack thereof.

Is Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands Borderlands 4?

Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands is not a Borderlands game, and it especially isn’t Borderlands 4. It’s instead a spin-off based on the character, with Burch describing it as a Gearbox-tinged loot shooter in the vein of the character’s original franchise.

The game is fantasy-inspired, so won’t feature the same futuristic, post-apocalyptic setting as its predecessors, though will feature the reappearance of Tina’s Butt Stallion, farts and all.

It seems that the game will take a Dungeons and Dragons approach to its setting, including rolls for initiative and the aforementioned dragons. The game’s voice cast will include Burch, Will Arnett, Andy Samberg, and Wanda Sykes.

Still, just because Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands isn’t a Borderlands game doesn’t mean it won’t be imbued with the same sense of humor. The same character and iconic cell-shaded aesthetic are present and correct here, even if it doesn’t adopt the same moniker.

Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands is set to launch in early 2022, with no definite release date given. Its official site explains that players can “explore an all-new chaotic fantasy world,” though not much more information has been given. No gameplay footage was shown during the event.
