At E3 this year developer Gearbox revealed its latest FPS-RPG, but is Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands Borderlands 4? Alternatively, is Wonderlands DLC or some sort of expansion for Borderlands 3, similar to the Tiny Tina’s Assault on Dragon Keep DLC for Borderlands 2? Or is it a full new Borderlands spin-off game from the series that just happens to feature Tiny Tina? Let’s have a look.
Is Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands DLC or Borderlands 4?
Wonderlands is a completely standalone game with a launch window of early 2022.
Gearbox has been teasing a potential new game in the Borderlands series for a while, but the studio has confirmed that Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands is not Borderlands 4 and is not a Borderlands game in any way. It is also not a DLC expansion for Borderlands 3.
It is inspired by the Tiny Tina’s Assault on Dragon Keep expansion for Borderlands 2, but it is set in its own fantasy world and is not based on the pre-existing Borderlands universe. However, it will still be a loot shooter in the Borderlands style, albeit one with Dungeons & Dragons-style trappings like rolls for initiative, etc. Gearbox has not revealed how Tiny Tina and her unicorn Butt Stallion will feature, or whether it is a game created by Tina in the Borderlands universe rather than a completely separate franchise. Presumably, the studio will reveal more later in the year as the release date gets closer.
Our reviewer enjoyed Borderlands 3 when it released in 2019, but didn’t feel it innovated enough, saying that “Borderlands 3 delivers more of the same for better or worse.” Hopefully Tina Tiny’s Wonderlands will be a breath of fresh air, even with a similar gameplay style and graphics engine. If you want to pre-order Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands or any of the many games featured at E3 2021, here’s where you can go to do that.
