N64 Mini? Nintendo confirms it wants to make more classic ‘mini’ consoles

Nintendo has confirmed that it wants to make more classic ‘mini’ consoles such as the NES and SNES Classic, with the company’s president Shuntaro Furukawa confirming in an investor Q&A session that he is interested in continuing the hardware line. With the long-rumored N64 Mini being the next console in Nintendo’s product line, this has caused speculation over whether we’ll soon see the confirmation of the mini console.

In a recent investor Q&A, Furukawa was asked to discuss future developments on its the company’s mini console series, and if it has plans to continue to “expand the population that comes into contact with Nintendo IP.” Responding to this question, and translated by GameRevolution, Furukawa said that the classic consoles are a great way to “convey the appeal [of Nintendo IP] to parents,” and that he wants Nintendo products “to be played by people of all ages, from children to adults.” Furukawa noted that there are many generations who pick up classic consoles such as the SNES Classic and NES Classic, and that he wanted to continue pursuing this.

While this isn’t confirmation that the N64 Mini is on its way, it does strongly suggest that Nintendo isn’t done with its Classic line of consoles. Both the SNES and NES Classic were huge financial successes for the company, and as the Nintendo 64 was the company’s next generational home console release, it makes sense this would be the next mini to be made.

However, there have also been rumors that Nintendo is working on a new Game Boy, after the company filed a trademark for the classic console’s design back in 2017. While this likely wouldn’t be a miniature version of the console given that it was already small enough, the trademark prompted speculation that a classic version of it was in the works. Still, considering the Switch already provides portable Nintendo gaming and many of the Game Boy’s titles don’t exactly hold up by modern standards, it’s questionable if that would be the case.

Is there a N64 Mini 2021 release date?

There is no confirmed N64 Mini release date, given that the console has yet to be officially confirmed. While this Q&A session is the closest Nintendo has come to suggesting that more classic consoles are on their way, we still don’t know what the company has planned.

In other news, it was revealed that Skyward Sword would receive a 60 FPS boost in its Nintendo Switch debut. A ‘Thicc Charizard’ Pokemon card was also recently revealed, with a whopping $30,000 price tag attached to it.
