Iconic GoldenEye 007 and Perfect Dark Artist Brett Jones Has Passed Away

GoldenEye 007 is one of the most iconic FPS games of all time, but sadly, one of its creators has passed away. Brett Jones — one of the artists responsible for bringing the legendary Nintendo 64 game to life — has been honored on social media by friends and fans of his work.

Jones was key to GoldenEye 007’s look

David Doak — another key figure in the development of GoldenEye 007 — said goodnight to Jones in a heartfelt message on X (formerly Twitter). Doak wrote “Now cracks a noble heart,” before adding “and flights of angels sing thee to thy rest,” a quote from Shakespeare.

An outpouring of replies has been coming in, with many sad to see the passing of the artist. Doak took to X once more with another post that referred to Jones as an “absolute legend,” while also fondly remembering his “BJ gates” joke from the game.

Those who are fans of the 1997 GoldenEye release will be very familiar with Jones’ work, who was responsible for creating the in-game models, as well as some of the animation. As mentioned in the VGC report, he was also influential in “shaping the design of Perfect Dark,” particularly when it came to the protagonist, Joanna Dark.

Perfect Dark was released on N64 in 2000 and is largely considered a spiritual successor to GoldenEye. Jones was a prominent figure at Rare, the British studio responsible for these classic shooter games, and also having huge hits in the guise of Donkey King Country on the SNES and Viva Piñata on Xbox 360.

Jones worked for Rare from 1994 until 2002. He was also involved with film and TV, with credits on such mainstream releases as The Last Jedi and Doctor Who. However, it’s his work on GoldenEye 007 that many will fondly remember him for.
