The DualSense controller represents Sony’s first major departure from the traditional DualShock design. It’s got nearly all the bells and whistles: haptic feedback, touch pad, 3D audio support, and adaptable triggers. However, it doesn’t have back buttons. Is there an option to add PS5 controller back buttons, or any other way to use rear paddles on the DualSense?
Is there a way to add PS5 controller back buttons?
There are several accessories available that offer PS5 controller back buttons. However, Sony hasn’t yet made an official first-party accessory for DualSense rear paddles. For now, only third-party accessories or controllers can give the DualSense rear buttons.
This may not come as much of a surprise. After all, it took years before Sony released the official DualShock 4 back button attachment. As expected, the accessory quickly became popular among “pro” oriented players. Sadly, it wasn’t popular enough for Sony to keep back buttons in mind when designing the PS5 DualSense.
Thankfully, third-party manufacturers are willing to help. The catch is that accessories are so far either rare or expensive. The folks at eXtremeRate have a programmable back button and remapping kit on Amazon, which isn’t too too costly. For something more sturdy, you can pick up a HexGaming PS5 controller with rear buttons, or have HexGaming customize your own Rival Dualsense controller with rear paddles.
If you really just want an official solution, you’ll need to wait until Sony releases its own DualSense back button attachment. Luckily, a recent patent filing (via GamesRadar) suggests that just such an accessory is already in the works, so it may just be a matter of time. This may be also be why Sony hasn’t yet released a PS5 Pro controller.
For now, the only way to add back buttons to the PS5 controller is with third-party accessories. Alternatively, you can get your existing DualSense controller customized with rear paddles added. Otherwise, you’ll just have to make do until Sony makes its own official back button attachment. At least the company is now offering a few new color choices.
