Howard Stark

Marvel’s What If? Episode 1: Who is Howard Stark’s voice actor?

The latest show set in the Marvel universe, What If?, is finally here. This first episode of the show takes place during the events of Captain America: The First Avenger, during World War II. Fittingly, most of the characters from that film reprise their roles here — including genius inventor Howard Stark. If you recognize the voice of Howard Stark in this episode, then you might want to know who Stark’s voice actor is in What If? episode one.

Who voices Howard Stark in Marvel’s What If?

Howard Stark

Howard Stark’s voice actor in Marvel’s What If? is a familiar one — it’s Dominic Cooper. He also played Tony Stark’s father in Captain America: The First Avenger and the Agent Carter TV show.

Yes, this is Howard Stark, but he isn’t played by John Slattery. He played an older version of Stark in more recent Marvel films like Captain America: Civil War and Avengers: Endgame. Therefore, it’s fitting that Dominic Cooper reprises his role here, as Howard Stark was much younger during WWII.

It’s a nice call-back to earlier phases of the MCU, where Cooper was the only Howard Stark we knew. Despite the new performance, his role in this episode of What If? is relatively similar to what he did in The First Avenger. Once again, he’s one of the scientists around to watch the super-serum injection, but with Peggy Carter instead of Steve Rogers. The big difference here is that Stark creates the C-15 Hydra Stomper armor — an early prototype Iron Man suit, which he gives to Steve Rogers.

In that sense, Howard Stark actually supersedes his son, Tony, to create the Iron Man hero decades before Tony was even born. It’s just one example of the tweaks to the timeline that What If? is capable of introducing, by opening up the multiverse like never before.
