Batgirl movie casts Brendan Fraser as its mysterious villain

The Batgirl movie 2022 cast has added Brendan Fraser to its ranks as the main villain, but it’s currently a mystery which villain he is actually playing. The veteran actor, who’s best known for his roles in The Mummy trilogy and in DC’s own Doom Patrol HBO Max series, has been confirmed as the Batgirl movie villain but there are multiple rumors as to who. Is Brendan Fraser the Batgirl movie’s Firefly, for example, or someone else?

The three possible Batgirl movie villains that Brendan Fraser could be playing are:

Firefly/Garfield Lynns

“According to sources” from The Hollywood Reporter, Fraser could be playing the villain Firefly a.k.a. Garfield Lynns. Firefly made notable appearances in both Batman: Arkham Knight and Arkham Origins, as well as a gender-swapped version in Gotham, and was actually one of the first villains to appear in Arrow. It’s certainly possible and this is the strongest rumor, but Firefly is a minor Batman villain at best.

Carmine Falcone

THR’s own reporter Borys Kit actually stated on Twitter after the news went up that he’d heard that Fraser was actually playing mobster Carmine Falcone, who in live-action was last seen in Batman Begins and in Gotham, but is also supposed to be in next year’s The Batman movie too.

The Penguin/Oswald Cobblepot

Speaking of villains who will be in The Batman, a possible outlier for the role is another gangster — Oswald Cobblepot, The Penguin. This rumor again comes from Borys Kit, who says that a key plot point will involve Fraser’s gangster villain’s son being involved with Barbara Gordon/Batgirl. This could be Alberto Falcone, but a major Batgirl story from 2017 features Barbara having a romance with Penguin’s son Ethan. Could Fraser be playing The Penguin instead, then?

The Batgirl movie still doesn’t have a confirmed release date, but it will definitely hit HBO Max first — and may even feature Michael Keaton’s Batman.
