A new rumor has surfaced, suggesting that Nintendo has begun work on a new piece of gaming hardware.
According to NeoGAF user wsippel, the company started working on a new platform last year. Unfortunately, the poster did not provide any sort of tangible source, claiming that he/she doesn't "really want to get people in trouble."
Here's the post in its entirety:
Almost certainly off-topic, but I don't quite want to make a new thread, because it would go to shit quickly. Also, I'd need to post a source, and I don't really want to get people in trouble.
Anyway, Nintendo apparently started working on a new platform in early 2013 and has already selected a vendor for the SoC after talking to several potential candidates. The SoC might be based on an existing design, but will be changed to fit Nintendo's requirements. I assume it's for their next handheld, though.
While we have to treat this as nothing more than mere rumor, it stands to reason that Nintendo may very well be exploring new hardware avenues, especially in light of Wii U's current struggles. There's also a good chance the Big N could be gearing up for the release of a new handheld within the next couple of years.
Hardware development takes time, so this all could be a long ways off if the rumor is in fact true. With that in mind, let us know what you think Nintendo should do with its next gaming platform. Should they focus on the handheld market? Would perhaps releasing a portable/home console hybrid be a wise move? Provide your two cents in the comments below.
