With Alice in Borderland back on Netflix for Season 2, many are excited to watch some more of the grisly games take place. Now that the “players” are competing in face card games, the difficulty level has increased, leading to some of the most intense scenes in the series’ history. Here are all of the games that you can see feature on screen in Alice in Borderland Season 2.
What are the games in Alice in Borderland Season 2?
- Survival, The King of Spades
- Osmosis, The King of Clubs
- Solitary Confinement, The Jack of Hearts
- Boiling Death, The Seven of Spades
- Checkmate, The Queen of Spades
- Balance Scale, The King of Diamonds
- Target, The Queen of Clubs
- Croquet, The Queen of Hearts
Along with these eight games, the majority of which we see play out in full during Alice in Borderland Season 2, there are four unnamed games that take place while the citizens of Borderland do their best to collect all of the face cards. One looks like a simple game of Mahjong, where the winner gets to keep their life, while another has competitors hanging from ropes, with some kicking others off so that they fall to their deaths. At this point in Borderland, it’s kill or be killed.
The first game we actually see begin on screen is Survival, which is headed up by The King of Spades, a deadly mercenary who will slaughter anybody in his path. Thankfully, it’s a game our heroes can escape, before heading to meet the King of Clubs, Kyuma, and his team of former bandmates, for a game of Osmosis.
Unlike many of the other adversaries Arisu and Usagi have faced, Kyuma is actually an incredibly respectful opponent who simply wants to survive. His game sees two teams of five face each other in a fight for points across two hours. Those points can be collected by having digital “battles”, where the person with the most points defeats the other; finding items in the countless shipping containers that fill up the arena, and that have a predetermined amount of points in them; and by touching the base of the opponent. It’s a fascinating sequence to watch, well worth its long runtime.
Checkmate, fronted by The Queen of Spades, is a game exclusive to Alice in Borderland Season 2, not featured in the manga on which the show is based. In it, The Queen Team initially consists of four members, who must go up against the Challenger Team, starting at 16. Across 16 alternating rounds, players from one team can chase their opponents on the other, aiming to press a button on the back of a harness each is forced to wear. Pressing the button converts the opponent to a teammate. The team with the most members at the end of the 16 rounds is named the victor, while the losers are killed. It’s an intense and emotional battle, especially since this is the first time a child is part of one of the games.
The final game, hosted by Mira, The Queen of Hearts, is the most brutal for Arisu. While he at first believes he simply has to complete three rounds of Croquet against Mira, once he sits down for a spot of tea before the third and final round, he begins to hallucinate. She almost convinces him that everything he has been through is the result of trauma after he lost his friends Chota and Karube in a car accident. Fortunately, Usagi is able to pull him back from the brink despite the intense psychological warfare.
