James Gunn and Peter Safran have unveiled their first DC Universe slate. In the first part of “Chapter 1: Gods and Monsters,” the pair announced a new Superman movie called Superman Legacy, written by James Gunn. Fans now want to know everything they can about the project, including when the film will be released, what it will be about, who will be in the cast, and whether or not there have been any leaks or rumors surrounding the story. Here’s what we know so far about Superman Legacy.
What is the Superman Legacy release date?
Superman Legacy will be released on July 11, 2025. The release date was given tentatively by DC heads James Gunn and Peter Safran, who described the movie as being the feature film to “start the DCU.”
Who is in the cast of Superman Legacy?
No cast details for Superman Legacy have yet been revealed. We do know, however, that Henry Cavill will be replaced as DC’s live-action Superman. James Gunn confirmed that the actor was “not hired” after he and Peter Safran took over as co-chairpersons and co-CEOs at DC.
Other than the titular hero, there have not yet been any announcements regarding characters from DC Comics that will appear in Superman Legacy.
What is the Superman Legacy plot?
James Gunn said in his DC Universe slate announcement video that Superman Legacy will serve as the “true beginning of the DCU.”
The story for Superman Legacy is being kept tightly under wraps, but we have been given a few teasers by DC co-CEO Peter Safran. He said (via The Wrap) that Superman Legends “is not an origin story,” and that “it focuses on Superman balancing his Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing.” He added: “He [Superman] is the embodiment of Truth, Justice and the American Way. He is kindness in a world that thinks of kindness as old fashioned.”
