Ubisoft had overhauled Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time Remake after heavy criticism following its reveal. And even though that was back in May 2022, the troubled remake is still in the conception phase.
The Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time remake still has no release date
Ubisoft posted a brief FAQ going over what’s going on with the title. It’s still in the conception phase over at Ubisoft Montréal — the developer that took over after Ubisoft Pune and Ubisoft Mumbai were taken off the project — and the team is “defining priorities, developing prototypes, and testing gameplay elements.” That team is also still growing, too, and there are no current plans to remake another Prince of Persia title.
This language overtly insinuates that the Prince of Persia remake is far off, but Ubisoft spelled it out even further by saying that there’s no current release date for the game and current pre-orders will be canceled. It also won’t be at Ubisoft Forward on June 12, and it’s unclear when it’ll make another appearance.
However, producer Jean-Francois Naud said in a complementary post that players shouldn’t expect to hear more this year. Naud stated that the studio was looking at fan feedback and constantly, along with game director Michael McIntyre, reiterated how important it was to capture the look and feel of the original while modernizing it. This goes from small “nostalgia markers” like the Prince’s shirt gradually ripping to large aspects like how the game’s combat, puzzles, and traversal are divided. Adding too much swordplay and not enough combat would throw off the balance, according to them.
The Prince of Persia remake will have some modern elements, including various accessibility settings, and combat and traversal will be refined. The two were adamant that all of the changes had to be in the spirit of the original, though, and “modernize the game while not distorting the original experience for fans, [while] still [being] able to offer something new for newcomers.”
Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time Remake was pushed from January 2021 to March 2021 and then delayed indefinitely before being set for sometime in 2022. It then, as was previously mentioned, went to Ubisoft Montréal in May 2022.
