Open-world games have seemingly been getting bigger and bigger. However, Obsidian Entertainment’s Avowed isn’t going to participate in that arms race. The studio spoke about the RPG’s modest size and how it compares to some of its other titles.
How big is Avowed?
Game director Carrie Patel spoke about the game on Xbox Games Showcase Extended 2023. When asked about Avowed’s size, she brought up two of Obsidian’s most treasured titles.
“It’s going to be roughly comparable to Knights of the Old Republic 2 or The Outer Worlds,” said Patel. “It is set up as a series of interconnected open zones that players can explore at their own pace. You can invest in discovering every nook and cranny in the world, discovering every secret, finding every side quest, meeting every character or you can have a much more focused experience. It’s really up to players and how much time they want to spend in The Living Lands, but I am hopeful that they’re gonna spend a lot time with us once Avowed releases.”
The Outer Worlds was praised for its modest size back in 2019. Many games of that era (which is still going on) tended to have massive open worlds, so many found that change refreshing. Comparing Avowed to The Outer Worlds gives a decent idea of how big Avowed will be, but the exact size won’t be known until it comes out sometime in 2024 for Xbox Series X|S and PC.
Avowed takes place in the world of Eora, which will be familiar to Pillars of Eternity players. This specific area is called The Living Lands, which Patel described as an otherworldly and very remote frontier with plenty of valleys, biomes, and creatures.
