Twitch Subscription Revenue Changes

Twitch Viewership Increases Despite Big Names Jumping Ship

Despite controversies over the way it pays streamers, not to mention big names leaving for rival platforms, Twitch saw an increase in viewers during May.

Much of it from League of Legends

According to a report from Gamesindustry.biz, there was a total of 1.76 billion hours watched on Twitch for May of this year. That’s an increase of around 5% when compared to the previous month.

These viewing figures can be broken down into the games that were watched the most. The report goes on to list the most popular, with League of Legends, Valorant, and GTA 5 being the top three, each totaling 124 million, 102 million, and 94 million hours, respectively.

Some of this also comes from The Legends of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, which released not long ago. While it’s at the bottom of the list, it still managed to boast 37 million hours watched.

This is all despite the controversies that have been going on lately. Twitch stars such as Amouranth and xQc have been jumping ship to rival site Kick.

On top of that, there’s been some controversy regarding the new Partner Plus program. While the scheme increases revenue splits, giving 70/30 instead of 50/50, streamers are only eligible when certain conditions are met.

For starters, content creators will need to make sure they can “maintain a sub count of at least 350 recurring paid subscriptions” for three months. It also caps the split for those who earn more than $100,000 per year.

This may not be bad for a lot of streamers, but the big names that do make this and more won’t be enrolled into Partner Plus. This could be why some of Twitch’s most popular broadcasters are seeking alternatives.

However, the figures do suggest that, with a 5% viewership increase in May, Twitch is still the biggest streaming platform on the planet.
