Baldur's Gate 3 Best Class for Every Race

Baldur’s Gate 3 Best Class for Each Race: Human, Elf, Dwarf & More

The Baldur’s Gate 3 best class can depend on what race you choose your character to be at the start of the game. The game has effectively selected the versatile heritage concept from Dungeons & Dragon 5e, meaning that a race doesn’t have specific bonuses to stats like in traditional D&D. This means your custom character isn’t confined to certain races and you can build more or less what you want without having to worry about min-maxing from the start. That said, every race and subrace has specific abilities that make the more suited for certain classes. Here’s a list of the best class for all of the races available at launch of BG3.

Baldur’s Gate 3 best class list for every race

The following are our recommendations for the best class for every race and subrace in the game:

  • Elf
    • High Elf: Bard, Cleric, Druid, Sorcerer, Warlock, Wizard
    • Wood Elf: Barbarian, Fighter, Monk, Ranger, Rogue
  • Tiefling
    • Asmodeus Tiefling: Bard, Cleric, Druid, Sorcerer, Warlock, Wizard
    • Mephistopheles Tiefling: Any
    • Zariel Tiefling: Bard, Barbarian, Fighter, Rogue
  • Drow: Ranger, Rogue
  • Human: Any (However, classes that have poor armor and weapon proficiency will benefit most from the Civil Militia racial trait.)
  • Githyanki: Any (Same as Human except with the Martial Prodigy racial trait.)
  • Dwarf
    • Gold Dwarf: Barbarian, Cleric (melee), Fighter, Paladin
    • Shield Dwarf: Barbarian, Fighter, Ranger, Rogue
    • Duergar: Barbarian, Cleric (melee), Fighter, Paladin
  • Half-Elf
    • High Half-Elf: Bard, Cleric, Druid, Sorcerer, Warlock, Wizard
    • Wood Half-Elf: Monk, Ranger, Rogue
    • Drow Half-Elf: Any (Same as Human with Civil Militia racial trait)
  • Halfling
    • Lightfoot Halfling: Ranger, Rogue
    • Strongheart Halfling: Any
  • Gnome
    • Rock Gnome: Bard, Druid, Rogue, Warlock, Wizard
    • Forest Gnome: Druid, Ranger
    • Deep Gnome: Ranger, Rogue
  • Dragonborn: Barbarian, Fighter, Monk, Paladin
  • Half-Orc: Barbarian, Fighter, Monk, Paladin

Most of these recommendations will give minor boosts here and there. The Human, Half-Elf, and Githyanki offer the widest range of class choice, while others like the Strongheart Halfling and Mephistopheles Tiefling have racial traits that give them any particular advantage for a class.

That said, the Half-Orc and the Dwarf have racial traits that make them quite formidable on the frontline. The Dragonborn, regardless of which subrace you choose, also has a breath weapon that is only effectively while in melee combat. Meanwhile, the Lightfoot Halfling and Deep Gnome have advantages on Stealth checks that make them great for a sneaky Ranger or Rogue.
