Mugen Souls Preview

Oh NIS, how you bring us such wackiness.

NIS has developed for themselves a reputation of bringing games from Japan with some, shall we say, personality. Mostly with meanies that can capture our hearts while they attempt to capture the planet for their own nefarious needs. At least, that's what they'd like you think, because then it's easier to dole out the demolition and take our collective pudding.

This time, in keeping with NIS's themes of world domination and adorable, tiny, big-headed, crazy protagonists, we now are presented with Mugen Souls: a story with a small girl with an apparently magical form of schizophrenia with seven different characters who, at will, can be brought into any battles she finds herself in. And what does she plan to do with this power? Why, take over the world, of course! What else can you do with a bunch of Japanese anime stereotypes bursting free at different intervals?

Have you played Disgaea or Phantom Brave? The battles here will remind you of both, but in full 3D presentation.  The whole package is a more traditional JRPG, complete with exploration of environments and turn-based battles. Characters can team up if they're nearby on the open battlefields or upcoming quickly in the fighting order. Match those two things up and you can unleash some powerful maneuvers that inflict billions of points of damage! I know! I saw it!

There's even an interesting development with creating your own characters to toss into battle. You can change their personality as well as their already expected traits. I was told they could well affect your stats and abilities, maybe outright changing the way you would need to use them in battle. That much is a little sketchy at the moment, but it would be nice, and hopefully we'll hear more about this idea when the release date gets closer.

For now, keep your eye out for Mugen Souls on September 18th. Should be a doozy!
