With how well God of War is doing, a surprise Netflix series would only bolster enthusiasm for the series. We gave the latest game in the series a perfect score, and for good reason. God of War is just one of those games that define a generation. With all the properties (like Castlevania) Netflix has been adapting for their original series, it wouldn’t be uncharacteristic for there to be a new God of War Netflix series. There are also rumors that Jason Momoa might be interested in playing Kratos in a screen adapatation. Furthermore, there’s even a teaser making the rounds that says the series will premiere on July 15. The truth, though, is a bit disappointing.
We’ve combed through the rumors to find out what’s really going on with this whole situation. Read on for everything you need to know about if God of War is coming to Netflix.
Is God of War on Netflix?
Well, there is a God of War on Netflix. It isn’t a series, though, it’s a movie. Before you get excited about seeing a feature-length adventure starring Kratos, you might want to sit down, take a deep breath, and prepare for disappointment.
The God of War movie on Netflix stars Vincent Zhao, Sammo Hung, and Yasuaki Kurata. It’s a Chinese film about Japanese samurai who engaged in piracy along the Chinese coast in 1557. It follows Chinese Generals Yu Dayou and Qi Jiguang as they strategize to defeat the samurai.
Honestly, it sounds pretty cool, and if you want to see a subtitled version, it’s on Netflix right now. I personally prefer the Nicholas Cage classic, Lord of War, but catching God of War on Netflix could be a fun way to spend a couple of hours. As for whether or not we’ll get a series based on the Sony property, I somewhat doubt it. It seems as though the next few games are plotted out, and there haven’t been any mentions of expanding the series to be a multimedia project.
If you’d like to watch God of War as if it was a movie, though, you can come view our Twitch stream where we’re playing through the entire game. Our previous streams are available on demand as well, so you can catch up with any you’ve missed.
Will Jason Momoa Star as Kratos in the Netflix Original God of War Series?
Unfortunately, Jason Momoa as Kratos isn’t a thing. Not yet at least. The whole rumor about Jason Momoa possible being attached to a Netflix Original God of War Series comes from an ancient interview with him during Comic Con 2012.
In the 2012 interview with tbreakTV, Momoa was asked if he would be would be willing to play Kratos if the role was offered. He said he would love to play him, and his answer would be, “hell yeah.”
Of course, that interview was conducted before the game was even in development, and really before Netflix started spending heavily on their original series. Jason Momoa might look like Kratos, with his beefy build and grizzled features, but as of right now there isn’t any sign that he’ll be playing the part.
What About the Poster That Says God of War is Coming to Netflix on July 15?
A poster has been making the internet rounds which appears to tease a God of War Netflix Original Series coming to Netflix on July 15. Unfortunately, that’s not the case at all.
The poster is a photoshop and not a good one at that. Netflix has revealed no plans to release a God of War series at this time. Hopefully, though, with how enthusiastic the internet is at just the mere rumor of the concept, Netflix will take heed when planning their original content in the future.
