01. Introduction
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
Genji is the story of the Minamoto Clan, with focus on the story of
Minamoto no Yoshitsune. He is a popular figure in the Japanese myth and
lore. Yoshitsune, was a general of the Minamoto clan of Japan in the late
Heian and early Kamakura period.
In the game, Yoshitsune came to aid his brother Minamoto no Yoritomo
against the Heishi Clan (also known as Taira Clan).
There are several famous historical battle that are depicted in the game
including the battle of IchinoTani, the battle of Yashima and the major
sea battle of Dannoura. The game does have subtle humour that may not make
sense to non Japanese. For example, in the battle of Dannoura, many Taira
warriors threw themselves overboard when they were losing the battle. To
this day, the Heike Crabs found in the Straits of Shimonoseki are
considered by the Japanese to hold the spirits of the Taira warriors. Thus
it is not surprising to see that Giant Crab appearing as enemies in the
game.

02. Character Guide
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
Minamoto no Yoshitsune
----------------------
Yoshitsune was the ninth son of Minamoto no Yoshitomo. He is one of the
best samurai in Japanese history, winning many battles. He was betrayed
in the battle with his brother Yoritomo and force to commit seppuku. The
game rewrote history by giving the tragic hero a better ending.
Yoshitsune is relatively fast and generally the best character to use
in this game. He also process the ability to jump further up if you time
his jump correctly. Later on, he is able to perform super jump that is
crucial in the sea battle of Dannoura.
Minamoto no Yoritomo
--------------------
Yoritomo was the third son of Minamoto no Yoshitomo. He is the first
Kamakura Shogan and ultimately causes the death of Yoshitsune.
Saito Musashibo Benkei
----------------------
Benkei was a warrior monk that serves Yoshitsune. He is depicted as a man
of great strength and loyalty. During the betrayal of Yoshitsune, Benkei
stood on a bridge and fend off the enemies. Long after the battle was
over, the soldiers found that the arrow riddled, wound covered Benkei had
died in a standing position. This is known as the "Standing Death of
Benkei".
Benkei is tough and strong. Using his attack, you can break enemies armor,
and generally kill them in a few hits. He also process a charge attack
that can be used to sweep enemies off the floor. However, he is so slow
that it is almost impossible not to get hit. His superhuman strength
allow him to break obstacle and crack wall.
Shizuka Gozen
-------------
Lady Shizuka, a court dancer, was one of the famous women in Japanese
folklore. She is the mistress of Yoshitsune. There are various version of
her death, some said Yoritomo ordered her death, other claimed that she
committed suicide shortly after hearing the death of Yoshitsune.
Lady Shizuka have a very weak attack but her weapon cover a wide range.
She is fast and if used properly can hold her ground against large
number of enemies. However, her HP is very low, so if you plan to use
her, it may be necessary to boost her HP. She can use her weapon to grab
an object and use it to cross gap. She can also grab enemies using her
triangle button attack.
Buson
-----
This character doesn't originate from Japanese folklore. In the game,
he possess the body of Kagekiyo, a scar covered boss character from the
first Genji game from PS2. He is a representative of the Overworld and
send to aid Yoshitsune against the Heishi.
His attack are very fancy looking but extremely short ranged. His second
weapon, Fearsome Shichi, have a better chance to hit enemies if you choose
to use him often. He had a special attack that is based on his currently
equipped item. During Kamui mode, certain weapon allow him to attack the
enemies multiple time. His weapon #5 allow him to attack indefinitely and
works wonder on 1-on-1 match since attacking this allow keep the enemies
blocking forever and refill his Kamui gauge. Overall, a very difficult
character to master. Recommended for expect players only.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
03. Weapon Guide
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
Defeating enemies with the crystal embedded in them with give you
Mashogane. Killing enemies will increase the multipler and give you up
to 2.0x the amount of Mashogane received. In Kamui mode, you have the
best chance to get a large amount of Mashogane. Yoshitsune is the best
character to set up insane amount of combo count giving you over 5000
Mashogane in a single encounter.

04. Kamui Guide
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
Your Kamui gauge will recharge gradually when you are attacking enemies.
It also recharges when your life gauge turn red. When your Kamui gauge is
full. Press L1 (default button) to enter Kamui mode. This put you into a
mini-game of button similar to God of War on PS2. However, it is easier
because the buttons are displayed in the same position as that of the
controller.
i.e. Left - Square, Top - Triangle, Right - Circle, Bottom - Cross.
Circle is always reserve for finisher but that is a tendency to fail
especially when used against bosses. In general, it is easier to press
the buttons based on their position rather than trying to interpret the
buttons. Give it a few try and you should be able to press them without
mistakes. You Kamui gauge determines the amount of time you have to play
the mini-game. Therefore it is better to press the button as quickly as
possible. If your weapon have a better attack power, you can cut down the
number of button press needed.
Successfully completing the mini-game and defeat every enemies will reward
you with some items. It appears that the strongest unit in that encounter
determine what reward you get. If any of them survive, you will not get
anything. So far the items I received so far are as follows:
Kurama Herb - Restores 300 HP to user
Tengu Herb - Restores 500 HP to user
Miracle Pill - Restores 1000 HP to user
Tathagata Pill - Restores full HP to user
Ghost Water - Restores 500 HP to all comrades
Vajra Crest - Halves damage for 30 seconds.
Prevents strong attacks from knocking the user back.

05. Amahagane Guide
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
When you are near an Essence of Amahagane, the Amahagane on the character
you are controlling at the moment will light up. It grow bigger and
brighter when you are near the hidden essence. Just use your weapon to
attack in that area to reveal the hidden essence.
The essence can be used to upgrade the HP and Kamui gauge of each
character.
You need to use 4 Essence of Amahagane to upgrade 1 slot of HP or Kamui.
Therefore it is best to use them 4 at a time. Upgrading 1 slot of HP will
replenished the HP of the user fully, similarly for upgrading of Kamui
slot. You might want to hold back your HP or Kamui upgrading since they
can be treated as HP and Kamui restoring items.
HP guage are arranged in set of 3 slots. To unlock the next set, you need
to use an Unsullied Amahagane. There are a total of 15 slots. 4 slots are
upgradable via Unsullied Amahagane, therefore, you should upgrade up to
11 slots at most, otherwise it will be a waste of essence.
HP upgrades for each character
+------------+------------+--------------+--------+
| Character | Default | Slot upgrade | Max |
+------------+------------+--------------+--------+
| Yoshitsune | 900 | +180 | 3600 |
+------------+------------+--------------+--------+
| Benkei | 1800 | +360 | 7200 |
+------------+------------+--------------+--------+
| Shizuka | 600 | +120 | 2400 |
+------------+------------+--------------+--------+
| Buson | 950 | +190 | 3800 |
+------------+------------+--------------+--------+
Kamui gauge are arranged in set of 2 slot. There are a total of 10 slots.
None of the slots are locked. 4 slots are upgradable via Unsullied
Amahagane, therefore, you should upgrade up to 6 slots at most, otherwise
it will be a waste of essence.
Kamui upgrades for each character
+------------+------------+--------------+--------+
| Character | Default | Slot upgrade | Max |
+------------+------------+--------------+--------+
| Yoshitsune | 500 | +50 | 1000 |
+------------+------------+--------------+--------+
| Benkei | 500 | +50 | 1000 |
+------------+------------+--------------+--------+
| Shizuka | 500 | +50 | 1000 |
+------------+------------+--------------+--------+
| Buson | 500 | +50 | 1000 |
+------------+------------+--------------+--------+
Essence of Amahagane are limited so do not waste them unnecessarily. Take
note that filling a slot of HP or Kamui will fill it up completely. As
such it can be use as a form of HP or Kamui restoration.
Unsullied Amahagane - Upgrade every character HP and Kamui gauge by 1 and
unlock a new HP grid, fully restoring HP and Kamui of the entire party.
These are very precious and should not be wasted. Use it only when you
had a party of four, otherwise the missing person will not get the benefit.
It may also serve as a full restore item.
Unsullied Amahagane location
============================
#1 - Get it at the end of Shinsin Temple
#2 - Get it after defeating Giant Crab at Ichinotani Beach
#3 - Get it after defeating boss at Yashima
#4 - Giant Battleship: Deck after defeating Tomomori
Essence of Amahagane location
=============================
There is not enough essence to fully upgrade everyone in the party.
Assuming that you had used 4 Unsullied Amahagane, upgrading a character
completely requires another 68 essence of Amahagane. To upgrade the
entire party will require 272 Essence of Amahagane. Therefore, do think
twice before blindly upgrading your characters.
The list may not be complete. If you have found an essence not list here,
please email me.

06. Hints & Tips
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
Press Select + Start to get back to title screen.
There are 2 ways to recharge your Kamui:
1. You can damage enemies to increase your gauge
2. Let the enemies damage you till your HP gauge is low, at which point
the Kamui gauge will recharge slowly. Switch to another character with
more health and run to somewhere safe. Switch back to recharge. This
method is great when you are in places where enemies doesn't respawn.
In order to have more healing items available for boss fight, unleash the
Kamui often. The tougher the enemies, the better the rewards.
In a boss fight, using Kamui will make your life easier. If your health is
low, try to dodge the attacks and recharge your Kamui gauge. Heal only if
you are about to die to conserve healing items.
If you want to have an easier game, do not use up all your Essence of
Amahagane and never upgrade all your Kamui slots until you reach the Final
Boss, Kuyo. To take out both form of Kuyo requires 1 Roaring Crest and 6
empty slots (i.e. 24 Essence) of Kamui from Buson. To play safe, always
keep some Essence in hand and leave some Kamui slots untouched. You may
want to do the same for Yoshitsune in the fight against his brother
Yoritomo.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
07. Walkthrough
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
Let's put it this way. This game is very linear in nature. At each stage
of the game, you either need to reach a certain location to trigger a
boss fight or fulfill some objectives to clear the stage.
There are 3 types of regular enemies:
1. Those that doesn't respawn after you had defeated them.
2. Those that respawn indefinitely.
3. Those that respawn while
Their commanding officiers are still alive.
Defeating enemies using Kamui is very rewarding since you can kill them
faster and get a nice reward at the same time.
There is a rather detail walkthrough written by Misfit119 so I feel that
there is no need to repeat that. Instead I will put down some of the notes
that might be useful to those playing the game.
