Devil May Cry 5 Multiplayer Guide – DMC 5 Microtransactions, Co-Op, Modes, and More

Imagine saying even a year ago you’d need a Devil May Cry 5 multiplayer guide for PS4, Xbox One, and PC. Utter madness, right? Still, here it is: That includes the thorny issue of DMC 5 microtransactions, whether co-op with Dante and Nero may be in the offing, any and all confirmed Devil May Cry 5 multiplayer modes, plus a few rumors sprinkled in for good measure. Don’t forget to keep this page bookmarked, too: our DMC 5 multiplayer guide will be constantly updated with the latest and greatest news and rumors from the Nine Circles of Hell and beyond.

Devil May Cry 5 Multiplayer Guide: Will There Be DMC 5 Multiplayer?

Remarkably, it looks to be the case. A recent PlayStation Store listing for Devil May Cry 5 (via DevilMayCry.org) mentions Network Play featuring “2-3 players”, though no other details have been revealed as of yet.

DMC 5 director Hideaki Itsuno has gone on the record about DMC 5 multiplayer during an interview with Eurogamer:

What we want to say is we have designed this game specifically to make the best single-player experience we can, that’s always been the focus…In terms of online and multiplayer and what have you… Wait and see,” he said.

Even so, that non-answer appears to corroborate the previous listing, one which indicates that a multiplayer component will be coming to Devil May Cry 5.

Alongside the Devil May Cry 5 co-op, it has also been announced that the upcoming sequel will feature microtransactions. This news was confirmed after Gamespot had the chance to play a demo of the game behind closed doors at Tokyo Game Show 2018. The demo allowed Gamespot to play as Dante, just one of DMC 5’s three playable characters. In DMC 5, we’ll be able to play as Dante, Nero, and newly-announced V. You’ll be swapping between the three characters at different times throughout the game. Of course, each of the three characters will have unique playing styles, including the likes of moves and skills. You can upgrade each character’s skills with Orbs.

However, these Red Orbs can be bought with our hard-earned cash. This will be useful for those who are struggling to keep up with DMC 5’s difficulty. The game’s director, Hideaki Itsuno, explained that the microtransactions are there to give players the ability to play the game how they want to: “With giving people the ability to purchase Red Orbs, it’s something we want to give people as an option… You should be able to play it the way you want to play it.” Those worried about the difficulty, however, will be glad to know that Capcom is balancing the game just as it did with the older titles.

You’ll be able to buy Red Orbs within the menu of the Divinity Statue, which acts as DMC 5’s in-game store.

Devil May Cry 5 Multiplayer Guide: Is There Co-Op?

Devil May Cry is not a series that’s known for its multiplayer offering. Traditionally a singleplayer franchise, the fact that there is any form of DMC 5 multiplayer has left many scratching their heads. Based on the aforementioned PlayStation store listing of DMC 5, we know that the game is due to feature some kind of online multiplayer for up to three players. Unfortunately, the PlayStation Store listing doesn’t go into any details regarding online multiplayer, just that it exists.

Speculation has it that there will be DMC 5 co-op. It makes sense, as there are three playable characters in the game (which coincides with the up to three-player online mode). As of writing, however, we don’t know what form the online mutliplayer will take, and will update this post when we do.

Devil May Cry 5 Multiplayer Guide: Other Confirmed Modes

Right now, there has been no confirmation of other Devil May Cry 5 multiplayer modes. However, we can use the above listing to make some educated guesses: a deathmatch/team deathmatch-style of mode is almost certainly ruled out, as is, yes, a battle royale mode.

In all likelihood, we can expect either a co-op mode (see above), or an arena/horde mode which would see players taking on the role of either Dante, Nero, or V and teaming up (or facing off) to rack up as many points as possible. You’d imagine it would also come equipped with some type of online leaderboard to see how your demon slaying stacks up against the rest of the (under)world but, again, nothing is official as of writing.

Devil May Cry 5 Multiplayer Guide: Cross-Platform Multiplayer

As of yet, there are no official plans from Capcom to include Devil May Cry cross-platform multiplayer. If previous Capcom titles are any indication, we could be waiting a little while longer for that feature. Monster Hunter World doesn’t include any cross-platform play, while Marvel vs. Capcom Infinite was only given cross-platform play between Xbox One and PC users months after release. Either way, don’t expect Sony to join the party; its position on cross-platform multiplayer is well known at this point.
