It’s the million-dollar question: is Black Ops 4 cross-platform? With Sony finally caving and announcing the likes of Fortnite crossplay, it appears only a matter of time before the staunch defence against the likes of Black Ops 4 crossplay is coming to an end, right? Maybe not. Recent interviews and statements from both developers Treyarch and publishers Activision don’t exactly fill us with hope… Here’s what to expect for the future of Black Ops 4 cross-platform play on Xbox One, PS4, and PC.
Is Black Ops 4 Cross-Platform?
Sorry to be the bearer of bad news but, upon launch, Black Ops 4 cross-play, as well any other type of sharing between accounts and users across Xbox One, PS4, and PC just isn’t a thing. That means you can’t play PS4 users on Xbox One and vice-versa. There isn’t even an option to play between users on Xbox One and PC, both Microsoft-heavy landscapes.
When Will Black Ops 4 Cross-Platform Play Launch?
If it happens at all, don’t expect any form of Black Ops 4 crossplay until early 2019. Stranger things have happened, but neither developer, nor publisher seem all too keen on the immediacy of the idea.
Speaking to Windows Central, Jonathan Moses, senior PC producer at Treyarch, opened up about the possibility of crossplay. He wasn’t too effusive, stating, “It’s something we’ve talked about at the studio, but we don’t have any announcements at this time.”
Though that’s better than nothing, and there’s even confirmation that, thanks to “the technology we’ve got behind the scenes, crossplay could be possible,” it still seems less than likely to arrive anytime soon, if at all. And it’s all down to performance, with Moses saying, “You’d really have to take into account how that would change competitive multiplayer though. Having one platform perform better than another would cause potential problems in a competitive setting.
But there’s still hope. In a statement released to IGN ahead of the Blackout beta in September, Activision opined, “There’s still a lot of work to do on both our side and the platform side to understand whether crossplay might be integrated…so we’ll be watching the upcoming test and will assess what the potential impact of this feature would be for our players and our games.”
Reading between the lines that, unless the tail is wagging the dog, Activision is pretty much behind the idea of Black Ops 4 cross-platform play. Whether that will come to fruition is another thing entirely. Right now, it’s a now. In the future? It’s definitely possible.
