With free-to-play components of games now being a regular occurrence, it’d make sense for Activision to blaze a new path for triple-A titles, right? Unfortunately, there’s no way two ways around it: you’re going to have to cough up if you want to play certain parts of Black Ops 4 multiplayer, though other modes are a little more complex.
Do You Need PS Plus or Xbox Live to Play Black Ops 4?
If you want to play online multiplayer, you’re going to need to have an active PS Plus or Xbox Live Gold subscription. However, you can play local multiplayer (with bots) and solo Zombies (again, with bots) both completely offline, or without a PS Plus or Xbox Live account.
You can’t be completely off the grid, though. An online connection will be required to ensure you’ve downloaded the latest patches but, other than that, as long as you’re not playing with other people online, you can still play Black Ops 4, even with no broadband connection, regardless of whether you own a PS Plus or Xbox Live Gold subscription.
Specialist mode, on the other hand, requires you to be online, but you don’t need PS Plus or Xbox Live to play Black Ops 4’s offline offering.
Do You Need PS Plus or Xbox Live to Play Blackout?
This is the unfortunate part. You will need an active subscription to play Blackout. The 100-player battle royale mode is, obviously, intensely multiplayer-focused, so you can’t even play Blackout with bots. This is an online-only affair.
Does Playing Black Ops 4 on PC Require a Subscription?
While you don’t have to fork over a single cent to play multiplayer, Blackout, or Zombies with friends in Black Ops 4, you will still need a working internet connection, as the game requires you to be signed in to the Battle.net client at all times. It’s not quite the dreaded DRM of yesteryear, but it’s worth keeping in mind should you suffer some significant downtime thanks to your ISP.
