Smash Ultimate Sonic – How to Unlock Sonic the Hedgehog

Super Smash Bros Ultimate is out now, exclusively on Nintendo Switch. The ultimate Nintendo crossover event is back and bigger than ever, with each and every character from previous entries returning. This includes Sonic the Hedgehog, one of the original third-party Smash representatives so, invariably, people have been wondering how to unlock Smash Ultimate Sonic. Knowing how to unlock Sonic in Smash Ultimate isn’t too difficult, so, if you wanna go fast, you’ve gotta read everything below.

Read on to find out exactly who Sonic the Hedgehog is, how good a fighter he is in Smash Ultimate, and everything you need to know about unlocking the famous blue blur.

Smash Ultimate Sonic – Who is Sonic the Hedgehog?

Sonic the Hedgehog is Sega’s famous blue, ultra-fast mascot. Back in the day when Sega was fighting against Nintendo’s SNES with the Genesis, Sonic was one of the main differences in the lineup of games. The speedy, blue, ring-obsessed hedgehog was Sega’s answer to Mario and it was seen as a big deal when he first joined Smash back in Super Smash Bros Brawl. These days, it’s not obscure at all to see Sonic appearing in Nintendo games, however.

In Smash Ultimate, Sonic is classed as an S-Tier fighter. This means that he is one of the best characters to use in the game. He is strong, quick, and more than capable of holding his own in any situation. Sonic’s Homing Attack, Spin Dash, and Super Sonic transformation (Final Smash) are all included in his moveset. If you’re after a quick fighter with strong recovery options and a deadly Final Smash, Sonic is your man.

How to Unlock Smash Ultimate Sonic

Smash Ultimate Sonic

Unfortunately, Sonic wasn’t one of the original eight Super Smash Bros fighters, so you will have to unlock him before you can play as him. Thankfully, there are plenty of different ways in which you can unlock Sonic in Smash Ultimate. Please bear in mind, however, that whatever path you choose to unlock Sonic with, you will have to beat him in a one-on-one Challenger fight.

The easiest and perhaps quickest way in which you can unlock Sonic in Smash Ultimate is through Classic Mode. To unlock Sonic via Classic Mode, all you need to do is complete it as Mario on any difficulty level/intensity you may choose. That’s it. Completing Classic Mode as Mario will put you into a Challenger fight with Sonic. Win it, and you will be able to play as him. Check out our guide on how to replay Challenge fights in Smash Ultimate if you lose, however.

If Classic Mode isn’t your cup of tea, you can also unlock Sonic by playing regular battles. Based on your level of button input, you will unlock new characters in Smash Ultimate every now and then. This method will work in other modes, too, but for simplicity’s sake, it’s easiest just to figure it out with regular battles. The unlock order follows a set path, but this will change depending on whether or not you have already unlocked other characters through Classic Mode or World of Light already.

Sonic is the 17th fighter you will unlock simply by playing enough of regular battles. This is directly after King K. Rool and before Simon Belmont. There is another way to unlock Sonic, however, but it might prove to be a little slower than the methods explained above.

How to Unlock Smash Ultimate Sonic in World of Light

You can unlock any character by playing through Smash Ultimate’s story mode: World of Light. You will find each character somewhere on the map, waiting for you to fight them. Once you beat the Sonic challenge in World of Light, for example, you will unlock him in the rest of the game.

Just as with King K. Rool and Greninja, however, Sonic only appears towards the end of the World of Light mode. You will find him in the World of Dark, waiting for your challenge in the Sacred Land.

As Sonic is a latter game unlock in World of Light, if you’re particularly keen to play as him, we’d strongly recommend unlocking him via Classic Mode, which only asks you to complete it at any difficulty as Mario.

For everything Smash Ultimate keep on keeping on GameRevolution.
