Sonic Mania released in 2017 and is one of the most popular games in Sonic the Hedgehog’s 30-year history. It’s also now available for free on PS4 as part of the June 2019 PlayStation Plus free games line-up, which additionally includes Borderlands: The Handsome Jack Edition to round up a stellar package for Plus owners. But speaking of Plus, what about the Sonic Mania Plus DLC that was released in 2018? Is that included in the deal? If not, how do you get the upgrade? We’ve got the answers below.
Does Sonic Mania come with the Sonic Mania Plus DLC?
The special edition of Sonic Mania, titled Sonic Mania Plus, came out almost a year ago in July 2018, so it’s natural to think that a free version with PS Plus would certainly include the extra DLC. Unfortunately, for some reason either SEGA or Sony decided not to include the upgraded version of Sonic Mania, so the version you’re getting with PS Plus is the base version of the game. That’s not necessarily a problem as you can buy the Plus upgrade separately, but it’s still a little cheap of them.
How to upgrade to the Sonic Mania Plus DLC
No matter what platform you have Sonic Mania on, whether you’ve got it free with PS Plus or not, if you’ve just got the base version of the game you buy the upgrade to Sonic Mania Plus. If you check the game’s store page (on PSN, Steam, or Xbox Store) you’ll see an expansion for the game called the “Encore DLC” for $4.99. This is the cunningly-disguised upgrade to Sonic Mania Plus, named after the game’s new Encore mode. It also adds two new playable characters, Mighty the Armadillo and Ray the Flying Squirrel. You can check out our full review of the Encore DLC here, and in all honesty, you’ll probably be fine with the base version…
