The announcement of the Nintendo Switch Lite brought about excitement and plenty of questions about the upcoming handheld system. While the cheaper price and interesting colors may attract some new buyers, there’s a certain group that will need some more questions answered. For current Switch owners, purchasing a Switch Lite may seem pointless unless current save files can be transferred. If you want to take your hours-deep Breath of the Wild with you on the go, will there be Switch Lite save transfers? The answer is, for now, not as straightforward as it seems.

Can I transfer save files to the Switch Lite?

While the ability to transfer saves will be present, there’s still a lot we don’t know about how exactly the save transfers will work. The good news is you can transfer saves, or that’s what Nintendo wants you to be able to do. The bad news is that it’s unclear as of now how to set up a save transfer or even if the Nintendo Switch Lite will have the ability do to so from launch.
For gamers who want to leave their TV Switch at home and take their saves with them on the go, there may be a waiting period. In an interview with CNET, Nintendo of America president Doug Bowser was asked if transferring games between devices would be possible. He responded, “Yes, you will have the ability to transfer between devices, your gameplay experiences. More to come on there, but that is the intention.” At the very least, we can take comfort in knowing that the dilemma of current Switch owners is on Nintendo’s mind.
