Hit the light bulb button in the bottom-left corner to get a hint.
There's also the magnifying glass, which shows you all the hotspots in the current area.
Some of the rooms are really hard to spot. So, try to exit every edge of every room and you might find a hidden area.
Some items are completely useless, so don't worry if stuff is left sitting in your inventory unused.
