Amiibo are small figurines depicting notable video game characters that also feature an NFC chip in their bases, allowing them to interface with compatible games by being held to the right Joy-Con’s analog stick. CD Projekt RED’s third entry into the acclaimed series of RPGs based on Polish author Andrzej Sapkowski’s novels is finally playable on a Nintendo platform, though the title hasn’t elected to adopt the Nintendo custom of integrating Amiibo support. So no, The Witcher 3 Switch does not work with Amiibo.

Whether minor or significant, most first-party games utilize Amiibo functionality in some way and many third-party developers follow suit in order to make their games more attractive to players on Nintendo platforms. Unfortunately, that hasn’t been the case in this instance and players will go without the ability to scan their Amiibo collections in order to reap potential in-game rewards.

Interestingly, the last large-scale RPG to be ported to the hybrid Switch platform was Bethesda’s The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, which was immediately lauded for its strong implementation of Amiibo functionality. Skyrim made a point of advertising the fact that players could use Amiibo from the Legend of Zelda line in order to get protagonist Link’s tunic from Breath of the Wild in-game. In order to complete the ensemble, it was also possible to acquire the iconic Master Sword and Hylian Shield.

At the time, this combination of items was noted as being reason enough for fans of Zelda that were otherwise uninterested in Skyrim to purchase a copy of the game. As such, The Witcher 3 may be missing a trick here. It’ll be interesting to see whether Amiibo functionality might be added post-launch; if it is, we’ll be back with an update.
