Playground Games surprised Forza fans yesterday with the announcement of a new Forza Horizon 4 battle royale mode called The Eliminator. This mode puts 72 drivers in a race against a Fortnite-style, ever-constricting bubble “zone,” competing to be the last person driving. The trailer released yesterday gave Forza Horizon 4 fans a brief look at the battle royale mode, but Playground has now released more details about The Eliminator, including its release time. We’ll cover how the Forza Horizon 4 Eliminator mode works in this guide.
Forza Horizon 4 Battle Royale | How does The Eliminator mode work?
Dropping for free today as part of Forza Horizon 4’s Series 17 update, The Eliminator drops up to 72 players into the game’s open world version of Britain. At the start of the match, the bubble-like arena walls begin to contract, gradually forcing all the racers toward each other. It’s important that drivers are in close proximity, because players’ main method of progression is to challenge each other to races within the constricting arena. At the end of the match — when the arena is at its smallest point — all remaining drivers are put into a final race, and the player who comes in first is declared the winner.

When one player challenges another to a race during the match, the game automatically selects a finish line, and the first racer to get there has the choice of either upgrading their car to a faster model or stealing the loser’s car. All players start as a 1965 Mini Cooper, so these upgrades are essential to increasing speed, ensuring players can outrun the arena walls and win the final race. In addition to challenging other drivers, players can also earn car upgrades by driving through the Car Drops scattered throughout the map, marked by purple smoke and banner-carrying drones.
Along with the battle royale mode, The Eliminator will include its own mini-campaign and rewards to unlock. These include the 2008 Renault Mégane R26.R, the 2016 Porsche 911 GT3 RS Pre-Order Edition, and the 1970 Mercury Cougar Eliminator. Players can also earn The Eliminator-themed driver clothing.
The Eliminator and Series 17 launched free for all Xbox One and PC players at 12 PM ET today, December 12, 2019.
