The release of Sony’s next-generation PlayStation 5 hardware might only be a year away, but that doesn’t mean support for the PlayStation 4 is winding down anytime soon. Just over a week ago the 7.01 update landed and aimed to “improve system performance,” while even more recently a new DualShock 4 peripheral was announced that adds professional-style back buttons for just $30. Now, the PS4 7.02 update aims to improve the user experience even further; let’s take a look at what’s included in the latest patch.
What’s new in the PS4 7.02 update?
Version 7.02 of the PS4 firmware isn’t massively different from what came prior. Looking at the Sony patch notes, it’s once again a case of behind-the-scenes changes that should serve to make for a smoother overall end-user experience.

It weighs in at 469.7 MB, which isn’t too big, but be sure to switch your console on before you want to start playing if you don’t have auto-updates enabled. Otherwise, you’ll no doubt face somewhat of a wait before you can get to gaming.
While perhaps not massively exciting, these sorts of small updates are exactly what keep platforms ticking over as they continue to grow. If you don’t typically encounter problems with your PlayStation 4 on a system level, then you likely have the 7.02 update and others of its kind to thank for it.
As previously mentioned, it’s also reassuring to see that Sony is continuing to roll out support for the current generation despite it entering its final year. Considering that the first PS5 consoles will most likely be in people’s homes at this point next year, the company could feasibly have shifted its focus away from the PS4, but that evidently hasn’t happened.
