To avoid spikes you can move your blocks to the left, move them to the right, split them apart, or simply leave them in the middle of the screen.
Keep in mind that the key to the game is timely transitions so watch out that you don’t accidentally hit the spikes because you moved the blocks too soon.
If you've got one finger pushed down, pushing on the opposite side will split the cubes.
