Unlike the main Gears of War titles, Gears Tactics allows you to customize some elements of your soldiers in between missions. Character customization in Gears Tactics not only lets you personalize your soldiers, but it’s also essential to equip them with gear that boosts their stats and gives them new abilities. The cosmetics in this game allow you to change the hairstyles and accessories your characters sport. Additionally, each time you switch gear, the look of your equipment will vary.
The character customization in Gears Tactics isn’t as extensive as XCOM, but that’s because most of your characters aren’t blank slates. A good part of your team have defined personalities, so you can’t go Mr. Potato Head on them. Fortunately, you’ll still get a good selection of cosmetic choices like paint, materials, tattoos, and what not to trick your unit out.

How do you customize characters in Gears Tactics?
You’ll get a chance to customize your units in Gears Tactics in between every mission. On the Barracks screen, you can level up your soldiers, equip them with new gear, and modify how weapons and armor look as well as your character’s cosmetics.
Each piece of equipment in Gears Tactics can be customized in a plethora of different patterns, materials, and colors. Some armor has specialty colors that are unique to that particular piece of gear. When you start Gears Tactics, you’ll have a wide selection of options when it comes to customizing apparel, and as you play through the game, you’ll unlock more.
Can you create your own character in Gears Tactics?
Unfortunately, character creation in Gears Tactics is automated. For non-main characters you can change things like:
- Hairstyle
- Hair Colors
- Facial Hair
- Facial Hair Color
- Tattoos
- Facial Scars
- Scars
- Headgear
- Upper Face Accessories
- Lower Face Accessories
- Undershirt
- Name
For the main characters, only the option to change the undershirt is available.
Aside from the options above, each recruited trooper is pre-generated. Things like gender, facial structure, skin tone, and other physical characteristics are pre-determined and can’t be changed.
What cosmetics can you get in Gears Tactics
Gears Tactics offers a wide variety of cosmetic options for characters. Weapon parts and armor change the look of your soldier. Additionally, you can obtain helmets that cover your soldier’s face, even on the main characters. Luckily, if you want the stat boost of the helmet, but still want your character’s head uncovered, there’s a toggle helmet button. You can also toggle the sleeves of armor off and on if you want to show off your character’s sweet tats.
Unfortunately, there’s not a way to set a particular piece of gear as a cosmetic option while getting the stat benefits of another. Since you’re going to be switching equipment so often, your most significant cosmetic options will be:
