By paying a visit to the Nook Stop terminal in the Resident Services building, you can scan certain Animal Crossing Amiibo in order to invite them to your island. After scanning an Amiibo, the game will ask “Would you like to invite [this character] to the campsite?” After selecting “Yes” in response, it’s possible to get an error message reading: “…It seems you can’t chat with [this character] right now.” The reason for this is that some Amiibo characters cannot visit or join your island.

For example, if you were to scan Digby — Isabelle’s brother and Happy Home Showcase employee in New Leaf — you’d encounter the error. This is completely intentional, as Digby can’t be invited to your campsite by design. Other special character Amiibo aren’t supported either, so the “fix” for this error is simply understanding that certain characters can’t be invited. Nothing is going wrong during the scanning process, so you don’t need to worry.

Digby and the other Amiibo aren’t totally useless, however. These figures can be used on Harv’s Island (Photopia) to make them appear in photographs that can be shared outside of the game.

  • This Animal Crossing error indicates that the Amiibo you’re scanning can’t be invited to your campsite.
  • There’s nothing you can do to “unlock” this functionality — special characters simply aren’t supported outside of Photopia.
