With Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War debuting so close to the release of next-gen consoles, fans wonder how cross-play, cross-progression, and cross-gen features will work. After all, it’d be a bummer if you started playing on PS4 and couldn’t transfer progress or play with friends on PS5. Fortunately, Treyarch has taken this all into account, and Black Ops Cold War has robust cross-platform capabilities.
Will Black Ops Cold War Have Cross-Gen, Cross-Platform, Cross-Play?
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare was the first title in the series to offer cross-platform play. It was hoped that Black Ops Cold War would continue the tradition, and it does. However, it goes a step further.
Those who own Black Ops Cold War on PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X, and PC can all play together. This game is the first in the series to feature not only cross-play but also cross-gen multiplayer. This is a great feature, especially for players who are on the fence about upgrading to a next-gen console.
Since Black Ops Cold War has cross-gen play, you can purchase the bundle for either PS4 or Xbox One that includes the next-gen upgrade for only $10 more than the standard edition. That way, if and when you decide to upgrade to the new system, you’ll already have a copy of the game.
Will Black Ops Cold War have cross-progression?
Fortunately, your progression in Black Ops Cold War won’t be tied to the copy of your game. Instead, it’ll be saved via your Activision account. All you’ll need to do to enable cross-progression is to link your account to another platform and start the game.
If we suppose cross-progression in Black Ops Cold War works the same as it does in Modern Warfare. In that case, you’ll retain both character and battle pass levels between platforms and any cosmetics. The only thing that won’t carry over is your COD Points, which are tied to the platform they’re purchased on.
