Phasmophobia can you be possessed

Phasmophobia Possession | Can players be possessed by ghosts?

Possession is a common trope of supernatural works, and players wonder if the same applies to Phasmophobia. The thought of ghosts possessing members of your team and using them against you is frightening. The description of one of the ghost types in Phasmophobia, the Phantom, even mentions possession as one of its abilities.

The ghosts in Phasmophobia are scary enough without worrying about them possessing a player. These supernatural beings can drain a person’s sanity or outright kill them, so what other attacks might they have?

Can a player be possessed in Phasmophobia?

Phasmophobia possession

Exorcism and possession are rife throughout horror media, and why not? Being possessed is one of the worst things that could happen. The fear of having one’s body used against them isn’t uncommon, and many works of horror prey on that fact to significant effect.

However, as of writing, Phasmophobia‘s ghosts won’t possess a player. They may appear and frighten someone and lower their sanity. They may even outright kill a member of the ghost hunting team. However, even the Phantom, which is said to be able to possess the living, will only perform the two actions above.

That’s not to say that possession will never be a part of Phasmophobia. The title is in early access, which means there are many features to be added. It’s almost certain that future content updates will bring new actions for the ghosts to perform. One that makes the most sense to appear at some point would be possession.

For now, players don’t have to worry about losing control of their avatar or having their bodies used as weapons against their friends. The worst thing a ghost will do is kill a team member. To many, this is a fate much kinder than having their agency stripped from them and being forced to watch as the malevolent spirit uses their body to maim and kill.
