The PlayStation 5 is continuing Sony’s trend of producing all-in-one media centers. Sure, the console is purpose-built to play games, but it’s also a fine way to enjoy movies and television. This is especially true for those who own a ultra high-resolution display. But does it support the latest high-definition videos? Does the PlayStation 5 play 4K UHD Blu-rays?
Does the PlayStation 5 play 4K UHD Blu-rays?
Yes, the PS5 can play 4K Blu-rays in UHD format. In fact, the PlayStation 5 is the first Sony console with native 4K UHD Blu-ray support. There’s only one catch: Blu-rays are only compatible with PS5 consoles featuring a disc drive.
4K displays are among the latest trends in high-end video. However, 4K monitors and TVs have been commonplace for years, and console manufacturers have only recently started aiming for 4K visuals. The PS4 Pro had 4K support, but it strangely wasn’t compatible with Ultra HD Blu-ray discs.
Thankfully, Sony has addressed this with the PS5. As long as you get one with a disc drive, you’ll be able to enjoy all of the 4K UHD Blu-rays in your collection. Of course, you’ll also still be able to enjoy standard 1080p HD Blu-ray discs as well as the more traditional DVDs.
Again, this only applies to consoles with a disc drive. You won’t be able to use discs with the PlayStation 5 Digital Edition, since there’d be nowhere to insert it. However, you will still be able to enjoy 4K video through supported streaming services such as Netflix, Hulu, or Amazon Prime. Just remember that in some cases you may need to upgrade your plan to unlock 4K streaming.
Don’t worry, your 4K UHD Blu-rays will play on a PlayStation 5, so long as you get the one with a disc drive. Otherwise, you’ll only be able to enjoy 4K video through streaming services or other means that don’t involve the use of an optical disc.
