Can you buy HDMI 2.1 capture cards for PS5 and Xbox Series X?

Content creators and general game capture enthusiasts are wondering if they can upgrade their capture cards in preparation for next-gen right now. The PS5 and Xbox Series X are mere days away, though current HDMI 2.0 capture cards won’t record the highest-fidelity gameplay footage. So, can you buy HDMI 2.1 capture cards for PS5 and Xbox Series X?

Sony’s PlayStation 5 console boasts some impressive technical specs, which means owners will need a similarly impressive capture card for the best gameplay recording and/or streaming experience. Is it possible to get HDMI 2.1 capture cards at the moment, though?

HDMI 2.1 capture cards for PS5 are not available yet. Recording optimal capture of PlayStation 5 gameplay at 4K 60 FPS isn’t currently possible via a capture card. Leading manufacturers like AVerMedia and Elgato are likely working on a next-gen capture solution at the moment, so hold tight.

While the PS5 is capable of natively recording at 4K, traditionally, capture cards offer content creators far more options and convenience. They also help to avoid filling the console SSD with footage, in place of games.

No. At the time of writing, there are no HDMI 2.1 capture cards for Xbox Series X or S. Capture card technology needs to catch up with the next-generation consoles in order for users to record optimal gameplay footage at 4K 60 FPS.

As with the PlayStation 5, the Xbox Series X is capable of recording 4K capture natively. This is done via holding the all-new Share button, though serious livestreamers and content creators aren’t likely to have all of their needs catered to. With Elgato and the like presumably hard at work on a next-gen capture card, just try to be patient.

In the meantime, HDMI 2.0 capture cards will continue to work on the PS5 and Xbox Series X, but there may be a loss of video quality.
